Fed: Aust ambassador pays tribute to de Mello

Australia's ambassador to Iraq, NEIL MULES, has paid tribute to SERGIO VIEIRA DE MELLO,the UN's top envoy who was killed by a massive truck bomb.

Mr MULES has told ABC TV the UN will continue operations in Iraq, but its staff andAustralians working in the country are deeply shocked by his death.

The bombing killed up to 24 people including Mr DE MELLO, who rose to prominence runningUN operations in troubled East Timor following its independence vote.

Mr MULES says it's impossible to say whether the envoy was directly targeted for assassination.

But he says it's almost impossible to defend buildings against such a large blast, although Australia's embassy is very well protected by armoured vehicles and troops.

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER said yesterday that West Australian woman, 39-year-oldPOLLY BRENNAN, was slightly injured in the blast.
